Parties and Celebrations
|
The Carnival celebration
takes place in the month of February. Carnival is a
tradition initiated in the last century, having roots
deep in the community, practically all the inhabitants
participate in turning the streets and plazas into fun
centers. Especially notable are the groups in disguise
dancing in the street, made up of people of all ages
and of course the parade of gaudy floats on the levee
that follows the length of the island.

The celebration of
the Santa Cruz or Holy Cross: it is celebrated in
the first days of the month of May in the town of El
Cedral and other towns of the peninsula. With 150 years
of tradition, it had its origin in the Caste War of
Yucatan, due to the promise made by a survivor of the
war who swore to honor the cross all his life, and to
continue with his descendants. Transformed now into
an agricultural, commercial, cattle and cultural fair,
it still retains parts of the Mayan tradition in the
ancestral dances such as "the Head of the Pig"
and "the Ribbons" that appear the afternoon
of the 3rd of May, the day of Santa Cruz.

The celebration of
San Miguel: is commemorated in honor of the patron
saint of the town and takes place in September, celebrated
with religious and secular celebrations.

The Day of The Dead,
el Dia de Los Muertos, is celebrated the beginning
of the month of November every year and is a tribute
made with prayers and offerings of traditional food
dedicated to all ancestors. Remarkable to see are the
altars decorated with candles, gourds, and traditional
art.
